Summary

At Troldebo Children's Home, prioritising the health and well-being of the children and staff was the focal point for the building design and execution, with an expanded focus on air quality, acoustics, visual environment, thermal indoor climate and architectural value. The daycare centre has accordingly been awarded the DNGB (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen) Heart alongside its DGNB certification.

The building comprises a nursery located on the ground floor and a kindergarten on the first floor, both with five living rooms. The shared educational workshop spaces include a library, a construction site, a science zone, and a large multi-purpose hall, whilst the large common room with high ceilings and plenty of light, the 'cave' and climbing tower that allows children to get from one floor to the other brings another level of excitement to the learning environment.

The timber clad modular building with a combination of vertical and horizontal slats blends harmoniously with its surroundings and in keeping with the Troldebo guiding principles of nature, sustainability, and science. The ventilated façade system incorporates an advanced passive fire safety solution that was supplied by Constructia ApS - The Siderise RH/RV Rainscreen Open State Cavity Barrier System.

Peter Snedker Ankjær, Design Studio Manager at Jytas A/S, says:

"We are happy with our choice of cavity fire barrier solution for the façade. In terms of buildability, Siderise RH/RV is very easy to use during the construction phase, giving peace of mind that the install meets the design criteria and the potential for error is greatly reduced. We have such confidence in the system in that it can be tailored to suit the architectural expression without compromising performance.”

The home for Ballerup Municipality has nine pedagogical principles cantered on building independence and self-esteem and learning through play, which are embedded into every aspect of life.

JJW Arkitekter and Stokvad Consulting Engineers worked in close collaboration with multiple stakeholders including the home’s management and staff to ensure that the new facilities supported the pedagogical approach.
