Going Beyond: Meet Joel, Siderise’s first engineering apprentice
At Siderise, we’re passionate about nurturing the next generation of engineers, those who will help drive innovation, push boundaries, and continue our mission to Go Beyond in everything we do.
Read on as Joel shares what inspired him to pursue engineering, what he’s learned so far, and how his apprenticeship at Siderise is helping him grow both personally and professionally.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what inspired you to apply for an apprenticeship at Siderise?
I’ve always enjoyed finding problems and fixing them, I like to be hands-on and see how things work. That’s what drew me to engineering in the first place. The apprenticeship at Siderise felt like the perfect opportunity to turn that passion into a career while learning from experienced professionals.
How did you first hear about Siderise and what made you want to join the team?
I was studying electrical engineering at Bridgend College, and during the course I had the chance to do a 25-day placement at Siderise — one day a week over several weeks. I really enjoyed the experience, and when I heard that Siderise was looking for an apprentice, I jumped at the opportunity. I’ve now been an apprentice for around four months, spending four days a week learning on the job and one day in college continuing my education.
What does a typical day look like for you in your apprenticeship role?
Every day is different, which keeps things exciting. I work closely with the team and often shadow them all to see how different machines are maintained, repaired, and improved. Siderise covers such a wide range of industries and technologies that no two days are the same — there’s always something new to learn or a new challenge to solve.
What kind of projects or tasks have you been involved in so far?
One of the biggest projects I’ve worked on involved developing and commissioning a new piece of automated manufacturing equipment, from the initial design stage right through to a fully working system. It’s been fascinating to be involved in building and setting it up because it combines so many areas of engineering — electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic. It’s a complex system, so working on it has really helped me understand how all those different components come together.
What new skills or knowledge have you developed since starting your apprenticeship?
I’ve learned so much more working hands-on at Siderise than I ever could from books alone. For example, I’ve gained practical experience wiring panels and now have a much better understanding of what actually goes into maintaining one. Seeing things in person really helps everything click into place.
How has the team supported your learning and growth?
The team here has been brilliant. Everyone takes the time to share their knowledge and show me how things work. Luke has been a great mentor — he’s introduced me to programming, which has really opened my eyes to another side of engineering. It’s been mind-blowing to see what’s possible!
What’s been the most rewarding part of your apprenticeship journey so far?
Building confidence in my skills and understanding has been really rewarding. The experience I’ve gained at Siderise has given me a real head start going into my second year at college, I feel much more capable and comfortable applying what I’ve learned.
When you’re not working or studying, how do you like to spend your time?
I’m really into sports, especially football. I’m recovering from a knee injury at the moment, so I’m taking it easy — but staying busy at work helps keep my mind active while my body recovers!
If you could describe your apprenticeship journey in three words, what would they be?
Learning – Rewarding – Fun.
The people here at Siderise really make it enjoyable, they’re always happy to help and make learning feel easy and natural. I couldn’t ask for a better team to support my development.
