10 key takeaways from the Siderise 2024 Sustainability Report
Our mission to ‘Go Beyond, contributing to safer buildings’ is the compass that guides our decisions and anchors our operations at Siderise. We have built on this through our values that champion customer first, safety, integrity, respect, and continuous improvement, as we continue to develop market leading products that the industry can rely on. Ensuring sustainable development is an integral factor in our approach – not a separate initiative.
In 2023 we were proud to launch a clear Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy, followed by the publication of our first Sustainability Report in 2024, covering 2023. We remain committed to making positive impacts across the four key pillars of Planet, People, Product and Policy, and are pleased to now share our second Sustainability Report.
Here are some of the key takeaways from this reporting period:
1. We developed a detailed decarbonisation plan
In 2023, we set the ambitious goal of achieving net-zero Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by the end of 2030. While we had initially selected 2023 as our base year, we have updated this to 2024 to better reflect our current operational footprint, following the commissioning of our second high-speed line, the opening of a new manufacturing line in Dubai and establishing our USA office.
Building on the goal setting undertaken in 2023, 2024 saw the development of an internal decarbonisation plan which sets out the strategic projects and investment required to meet our 2030 targets. This included:
Implementation of renewable technologies.
Energy efficient site upgrades.
Electrification of our heating.
Improvement of transportation.
2. We installed our first solar array
In an exciting step towards our goal of producing 20% of our energy demand from onsite renewables by the end of 2030, we installed our first small solar PV array on the Innovation Centre at our Maesteg site with the capacity to generate up to 2,087 kWh/year.
We continue to procure 100% green electricity backed by the Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) scheme at our Maesteg site, as well as investigate the feasibility of implementing both solar PV and heat pump technologies at all our UK manufacturing sites and have obtained cost proposals to inform future budget applications.
3. We achieved our interim target for company car electrification
Our aim is to transition our entire fleet to 100% electric vehicles by the end of 2030, championing cleaner transportation practices. In 2024, we achieved our interim target for company car electrification, with 70% of our company car fleet now fully electric with a further 17% hybrid. We also provide electric vehicle charging stations free of charge for employees and visitors at our Maesteg site, to further encourage the wider adoption and use of electric vehicles.
4. We were named in the Sunday Times Best Place to Work
We are extremely proud to be one of only 15 construction businesses listed in The Sunday Times Best Places to Work 2024. This milestone achievement stands as a testament to the satisfaction and happiness of our workforce, with 87% of employees reporting in the related survey that they felt proud to work for Siderise. Our people are at the heart of everything we do, and we believe in fostering a workplace culture where every employee feels valued, respected, and empowered. We continue to adopt a proactive approach to supporting employee growth and development, wellbeing, and engagement, all of which contribute to our positive employee experience.
5. We achieved ISO 45001 at our Maesteg site
In July 2024, our site in Maesteg achieved ISO 45001: 2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System certification, whilst our site in Hadleigh maintained its certification under the same standard, which was first achieved in 2019. This systematic approach ensures comprehensive management of health and safety hazards across all our site facilities, including manufacturing, warehousing, and office-based activities, as well as employees working onsite and remotely.
6. We established a CSR committee and held several community engagement days
To oversee the implementation of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy, in early 2024, we established a formal CSR committee. This is responsible for ensuring a clear, equitable and transparent process is followed regarding all community requests for support, whether through charitable donations, community investments or corporate initiatives.
In addition to establishing the CSR committee, we held three successful community engagement days. During the summer, 10 volunteers from SIL Maesteg spent over 45 hours preparing Maesteg Welfare Park for its grand opening, transforming the area into a colourful and welcoming space for the local community.
In November 2024, we assembled a team of eight volunteers to support our community partners at the Caerau Men’s Shed with receiving and storing a large delivery of Christmas Trees, ready for sale at affordable prices to the local community. The proceeds from the tree sales provided funding for not only the Caerau Men’s Shed but contributed towards several additional community initiatives.
Finally, in December 2024, we worked in partnership with local charity Keep Wales Tidy and nearby Ysgol Cynwyd Sant (St Cynwyd's School) to develop the foundations for a community growing garden. Ten staff volunteers laid railway sleepers to create a planting area. As the growing garden develops it is hoped it will offer local community growers’ access to affordable and nutritious freshly grown produce, as well as a learning opportunity for the local children.
8. We gained the CCPI Mark for all our core passive fire product ranges
During 2024, we successfully completed the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI) assessment process for all our core passive fire protection ranges, providing greater confidence that the information surrounding them is “clear, accurate, up-to date, accessible and unambiguous.”
To gain a CCPI mark, companies are subjected to a rigorous and independent assessment process, which includes assessing that the leadership and business culture aligns with the ethos of the CCPI, as well as providing information and clear evidence of conformance to each of the Code’s applicable eleven clauses. In line with our long-term commitment to ‘integrity in all we do’, achieving CCPI conformance for these product sets is just one part of our wider strategy to support accurate specification and a safer built environment.[ST1]
9. We achieved Ecovadis Gold in our acoustics division
Following its Silver Medal recognition in 2023, Siderise Special Products was awarded a Gold Medal by EcoVadis—the globally recognised, independent business sustainability assessment platform. With an improved score of 74/100, we now rank in the top 5% of the 100,000+ companies across 175+ countries that have voluntarily undergone the assessment. The Gold Medal recognises our genuine commitment to operational best practice and to continuous improvement in the areas of Environment, Labour and Human Rights, Ethics and Sustainable Procurement.
10. We developed a new supplier screening system
During 2024, we developed an online supplier questionnaire and audit process, assessing against environmental and social criteria, that will provide a standardised and controlled approach to supplier screening.
In 2024, we assessed a portion of our supplier base to gather information on environmental and social performance, with a view to continue screening further suppliers in 2025. While we do not yet apply defined environmental and social screening criteria for new suppliers, this initial engagement represents an important step towards integrating sustainability considerations into our procurement practices.
Looking forward
We are extremely proud of how our sustainability journey is unfolding and the steps we have continued to take towards meeting our ambitious goals. This has not been without its challenges: despite conscientious efforts to reduce our GHG emissions, the increased demand for our products and the subsequent expansion of our business have resulted in an increase in both total energy consumption and total Scope 1 GHG emissions.
Our most fundamental learning from the development of the 2024 Sustainability Report is the recognition that being a growing business will inevitably impact our progression, but it will not impact our commitment. We remain steadfast in our dedication to the decarbonisation of our operations, alongside continued excellence in our people practices, product development and policy approaches. We’re pleased to continue sharing our progress with our customers, suppliers and the wider industry.
