Purpose of this position
The Power Press Operator and Tool Setter is responsible for operating and setting up mechanical and hydraulic power presses to manufacture components to precise specifications. This role ensures the efficient and safe operation of the press machinery, maintaining high standards of quality and productivity. The operator is also responsible for setting up the tools and dies required for different jobs, making adjustments as necessary to ensure optimal performance. The role is critical in supporting production schedules and ensuring that safety protocols are strictly followed to prevent accidents and equipment damage.
Key responsibilities
- Operate power presses, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Set up tools and dies for production runs, adjusting press settings as necessary.
- Inspect completed parts for quality and conformance to specifications.
- Perform routine maintenance on press machinery and tools.
- Troubleshoot and resolve minor mechanical issues with the press.
- Keep accurate records of production outputs, maintenance activities, and tool setups.
- Work closely with the quality control team to address any issues with parts or processes.
- Follow all safety protocols and ensure that the work area is kept clean and organized.
- Assist in the training of junior operators as required.
Qualifications
You will have a combination of technical qualifications and relevant experience. Preferably, you will have:
- NVQ Level 3 in Engineering Manufacture or equivalent
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with power presses in a manufacturing environment
- Certification in power press safety, such as the PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) or equivalent
- Understanding of ISO quality standards relevant to manufacturing
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
- Specific industry experience is important. This knowledge can be gained through qualifications or on-the-job experience.
Job Function Technical Knowledge and Skills
- Proficient in the operation and setting of both mechanical and hydraulic power presses
- Skilled in tool and die setup, including precision adjustments
- Ability to perform basic maintenance on press machinery
- Familiarity with measuring tools, such as calipers, micrometers and gauges
- Knowledge of troubleshooting techniques for press equipment
- Competent in conducting quality checks and using inspection tools
- Understanding of machine safety protocols and emergency procedures
