The current curtain wall product standard is BS EN 13830:2003. This covers fire performance, weather tightness, wind loading, other applied loads, impact and thermal transmittance but it is currently being revised in order to widen its scope ready for the implementation of CE marking. Part of this revision, to be completed by the end of 2012, includes the need for fire stopping to be tested to BS1364-4 and for a fire stopping manufacturer's product to be included in a curtain wall system the fire stop material will need its own independent CE mark.

Siderise Insulation Ltd. have been at the forefront of cavity barrier technology for over 35 years and their range of Lamatherm fire stops are widely regarded as market leaders in the field of façade fire protection. Siderise have always striven to ensure that they have the most comprehensive testing on their products and have now completed a unique BS1364-4 on their CW-FS fire barrier. The test was unique because it was carried out using a non-fire rated aluminium curtain wall system glazed with standard non fire rated double glazed units. The normal recommendation is for 1364-4 tests to be carried out using a fire rated steel façade but these are rarely used in real life and do not replicate the movement that will occur in an aluminium construction.

The Siderise test utilised a full scale aluminium façade with additional fire protection measures that enabled the test house, Exova Warringtonfire to run the test for 3.5 hours without integrity or insulation failure. During this time the floor slab deflected by up to 67 mm and the façade by up to 30 mm without product failure. This can only be achieved by products that have been engineered to have the rock fibres running in a vertical orientation (lamella) and it is unlikely that the majority of products that currently have a horizontal orientation will be able to accommodate these levels of movement and will therefore not be suitable for CE marked curtain wall constructions.

As a result of the test Siderise will be able to add CE marking to its long list of technical approvals including Certifire third party certification. In contrast to some other systems available in the market the Lamatherm CW-FS is a dry fit system which is easy and fast to install whilst giving all the movement and acoustic advantages.
